I am thankful for the lady at the Farmer's Market with the "Pie Fixes Everything" sign. While I have bought a pie from her and it was wonderful, I tend to buy one chocolate chip and one molasses crinkle cookie.

And it is so very odd to arrive at the market in the dark. It feels different in the dark.

I am stealing a meme-like idea from Lissa, and posting a thing I am thankful for each day from now til Thanksgiving.

Since I missed November 1, yesterday I was thankful for books and the ability to escape from my current stresses.

Today, I am thankful for fall leaves - we still have a few patches of color left.

Lissa was grateful for the sun. I am reminded of the big difference between living in Maine and living in New York. The winters here are not all that colder, or much snowier, but they are darker.

Got out of work today to darkness. The sky was indigo, the sun was down. Ah, sunset at 4:30 - Daylight Savings Time ending is a really abrupt thing.

On the other hand, the sun was up not too long after 6:00 AM, making it easier ot get up in the morning.

There is an advice column for geeks and gamers. Jess Hartley was a guest at UBCon twice, and she has worked for White Wolf and other gaming companies. Now, she is taking on the role of Miss Manners for those of us who game or have other geeky hobbies - answering reader mail and questions. She's covered things like keeping an IC romance just IC, dealing with a GM who is not enforcing the rules equitably, and talking to the general public while at a con or other event.

Check out One Geek to Another at her website : http://www.jesshartley.com/index.php

She also wrote the very popular series on "GenCon For The Aspiring Professional."

Sooooooooo....

You get out of work at 5:15 because you lost track of time. Fine, your fault.

You drive down to the next decent-sized town for D&D, thinking about what to grab for dinner.

You arrive at D&D, only to learn that the DM is sick and there is no game.

Your phone rings, and it is work, and the computer system that checks out the books is not working.

You then get the voicemail telling you about the fact that there is no D&D, which you only notice now because you are using your phone.

You go back to work, arriving around 6:10, with no dinner.

You read emails, learn how the offline system works, print out that info, and get it to your co-workers.

You then learn that while you were doing all this, the problem got fixed, but the info on how to get the offline data into the system is from an older version of the system and won't work (you can't find an ADDITIONAL CIRCULATION FUNCTIONS menu).

You leave work again, at 7:40.

You thank the gods that your favorite BBQ joint is open until 9:00 and can serve you chili, cornbread, hot tea, and sweet potato pie. And a stiff drink.

They even apologize for messing up said stiff drink - they must not get many people (perhaps many women?) ordering single-malt scotch straight up.

Hi.

So, I do exist. Unpacking, work (great new job, lots of work to do), and the new Pathfinder Role Playing Game has really sucked up a lot of my time. Oh, and I also found a local D&D game at the local store.

I'll put up a real post at some point, possibly after I get back from vacation. Said vacation will be taking me to Rochester for part of Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (the 5th-7th). If you would like me to crash your Labor Day weekend, do speak up.

This caught my attention today. I know I've got a number of comic-reading friends, so I must ask: do you think this is a good or bad thing? I'm not thrilled, but maybe a comics geek has a better perspective on this one. Cory? Netbard? Anyone?

So tired

Vinny shall represent me being tired. He's my default "I don't have an icon for that" icon.

I'm so darn tired. I haven't packed much since I got home from the farmer's market festival thing today, yet I'm still feeling really drained. The festival was fun, the band I went to hear was good, and I got a going-away present I really didn't expect.

And, in other good news, the warranty did pay to replace my steering rack. This would have cost 500-600, so that's a huge relief.

Now, I just need to get more packing done. But i don't have the energy to move. I do think I have enough boxes now, though.

Oh yay

So Mr. Car Repair Guy, you're saying you need to replace the entire steering rack?

Great!

And this should be covered by my warranty?

Fabulous!

Argh!!!!!
eseme: (dark)
What's that you say, Mr. Oil Change? My car is making a strange noise because it is leaking Power Steering Fluid? The same fluid I asked your shop to check last time and you said it was OK, even though I was hearing this noise?

And what happens if I drive to Maine? Oh, the steering might freeze up. Great.

What's that you say, Mr. Car Repair Shop (which sold me the car)? You're out of loaners? Come back at 1:00, and maybe spend the rest of the afternoon at your shop instead of packing?

This blows. I'll probably be out the repair bill, since odds are this is another hose that is not covered by the warrenty I got. Lovely.

And I spent the morning running some quick errands, and now the afternoon at the car shop. I'm now a full day behind schedule on packing.

There are a couple of authors that I am reading online, and enjoying. I still prefer print, but since both authors publish onlien in a serial format, I get updates faster this way.

Most of you probably know about Addergoole, as the author is a mutual friend. In case you don't, it's mysterious boarding-school/college story, and the subtle strangeness of the place is revealed slowly, which keeps the reader's interest. The story does get rather sexual at times, so if that is not to your taste, look elsewhere. It updates twice a week (occasionally once a week if the author's life is unisually busy). Friending [livejournal.com profile] addergoole will get you updates as they happen.

I'm really enjoying the recently started Spots the Space Marine story/novel/script: This link is to the most recent episode, but it has a link at the top to all episodes (scroll down or go to previous entries with the tag to get to the earliest stuff). [livejournal.com profile] haikujaguar is well worth reading - she is an artist and writer, and her work is varied and always interesting. She also wrote the Aphorisms and Admonisments of the Kerdishar, two sets of short stories which can be found on her website Stardanger.org and on Amazon. She also publishes daily updates on her life and that of her young daughter - her observations of her baby at 21 months are very interesting (she notices things like the first time her daughter displays imagination, makes new sentences, and the various times she puzzles out the world around her). Friending her LiveJournal provides for interesting, near-daily reading and artwork (she has thousands of images up in the gallery on her website). Oh, and she just started a Zazzle store, which can be found here - I want stuff! Those interested in selling stuff with their artwork or logos on it may want to check out her initial post on Zazzle as there is a conversation comparing it to CafePress.

There is this Words! meme going aroud. Comment and I use 5 words to describe you.

Below is 5 words from Lissa:

Words! )

I finally found some words from a reviewer that express my feelings:

"With one film, J.J. Abrams has made Star Trek younger, flashier, sexier, funnier, and less intelligent, but more exhilarating than it has been in decades. By altering the franchise's storied past, he ignites a fevered barn-burner that's geared toward today's action junkies but also sets the stage for what could be a long and prosperous future." (emphasis is mine)

Thank you, FilmCritic.com

I did laugh. I liked seeing familiar characters in a new setting. The humor was generally great (although Scotty is funny on his own, he does not need a lame sidekick).

But ye gods, the plot was awful, and I DO NOT like this new alternate universe. Note to director : when Star Trek is annoying and messes up the timeline, they PUT IT BACK.

I do not want dumbed down Trek. I like the philosophical questions, I like the moral quandaries.

The second co-creator of D&D passed away, after at battle with cancer. He was only 61.

Both of them were relatively young, and it saddens me to think of what more they might have given us.

So, I need to write in this thing more.

Let's see, the holidays happened, and there was lots of driving around, and then seeing my sister after the holidays while she was moving. And I need to get my passport renewed, shince she will be living in Canada for a while and I'd like to visit.

I've found a local gaming group, which is cool. They play war games and board games, and eventually invited me to a D&D game. This is great, I've really missed D&D. We only play twice a month, or one a month if people's schedules are zany, but it's great fun. And I've kind of gotten back into painting miniatures, which I enjoy.

There may be another D&D group eventually. I finally met the doctor around here who plays D&D, and may end up playing in his Pathfinder campaign. Which would be cool, as playing 3.5 again means that the skills would no longer be nerfed.

And I will be near Rochester this weekend. But, not really in Rochester. I'll be at Running Gagg, spending a romantic weekend at a gaming convention. Well, I think it's romantic, but I'm a geek. Anyone else going?

The holidays were great this year. I picked up Panther in Rochester on Yule, and got to have him at my place for a couple of days, which was cool.

The weather on the 24th was supposed to involve freezing rain. This posed a problem, as we were due to travel to Maine that day. So I got out of work a bit early (I'll work extra hours this week) and we left on the 23rd. This resulted in an extra day of just relaxing at my parents' place, which was lovely.

Christmas itself was rather minimalist. I got a number of neat things (including jewelry and art) from my family. We then went to my cousins' place, where Christmas was decidedly less minimalist (and not as nice, I thought).

I then got to drag Panther all over the mid-coast area visiting friends and shopping. Much fun was had by all.

The return trip today was wonderful driving, thanks to the unseasonable thaw.

oh, and I had essentially no internet access during this time - if anything important happened, let me know.

My Balance Card painting arrived this week. It's lovely and glowing, and represents the cards pulled when I asked for an engagement reading.

And then this print arrived today, in a nice poster size. It's stunning! I need to find a local framing shop.
