RAWR.

I got in my car this morning and then had a panic that I could not go to work because I had lost my keys. I knew I used them to open the car, but they were lost and not in the ignition where they should have been. They were in my pocket.

I discovered what skirt I am wearing today when I got to work and took off my coat. I remember grabbing a skirt and getting dressed, but not which one.

I am normally NOT a morning person, but this is far, far worse than usual.

Being on call for work can be a nice boost to the bank account. Yay, extra money!

But getting a phone call at 12:42 AM and helping someone with no internet connection install software for an hour RUINS your day.

RAWR.... BRaaaaaaaaaaains missing....... THUD

Sooooooooo....

You get out of work at 5:15 because you lost track of time. Fine, your fault.

You drive down to the next decent-sized town for D&D, thinking about what to grab for dinner.

You arrive at D&D, only to learn that the DM is sick and there is no game.

Your phone rings, and it is work, and the computer system that checks out the books is not working.

You then get the voicemail telling you about the fact that there is no D&D, which you only notice now because you are using your phone.

You go back to work, arriving around 6:10, with no dinner.

You read emails, learn how the offline system works, print out that info, and get it to your co-workers.

You then learn that while you were doing all this, the problem got fixed, but the info on how to get the offline data into the system is from an older version of the system and won't work (you can't find an ADDITIONAL CIRCULATION FUNCTIONS menu).

You leave work again, at 7:40.

You thank the gods that your favorite BBQ joint is open until 9:00 and can serve you chili, cornbread, hot tea, and sweet potato pie. And a stiff drink.

They even apologize for messing up said stiff drink - they must not get many people (perhaps many women?) ordering single-malt scotch straight up.

One of the less fun parts of being a librarian is writing grants and jumping through hoops to get grant money.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has nicer hoops than most.

These hoops include an all-expenses-paid trip to the Sagamore resort.

Sadly, I don't think the spa is considered a business expense. I'm pretty sure I won't be staying in the Castle either.

However, I am not about to turn down three days and two nights at a posh resort on Bill Gates' dime.

I leave tomorrow afternoon, and return sometime Tuesday. The resort has wireless, but may not have a computer lounge for those of us with no laptops. So I may be without LJ access or email for that time.

They have hiking trails! And I bet there is a pool!

*sigh*

This is a stealth post from work. I'm technically on lunch.

So I somehow failed to pack the power cord for my computer. It's being mailed to me from Maine. So while I now have Roadrunner, I can't really USE it.

*sigh*

Job is very great thus far. I've got a meeting tomorrow at breakfast, another one next week... a Board meeting sometime, and I'll be going to a conference in Lake George in April. Plus I should be able to attend both cons this Spring (SimCon in Rochester and UBCon in Buffalo) and the library thinks of it as vaguely job related. And I got flowers! And have two adult programming events to run, one this month and one in April. And I may be the kinda-sorta YA librarian, at least as far as events and programming go.

Other than the internet mess, life is good.

But I will be scarce online, because I can't get on the internet after work on a public terminal, because I am here until the library closes...

Why I put the futon hardware in a bag with nothing else but shoes, I really don't know. Normally shoes are pretty low on the list of things to unpack, but I needed to find some to wear to work.

I even bought a shoe organizer thing, but it turned out to be wider than the door I wanted it on. Of course, I didn't realize I had a non-standard size door until I'd already got the thing mostly assembled. I'm returning it today, and ended up using an old shoe organizer.

This would be when I found the futon bits. Yay! But I didn't find my good screwdriver. Darn. not sure where that is. Thankfully the backup screwdriver does have a Phillips-head.

I'm back in the library, seeing as I have to leave the house to return the shoe organizer. This time I'm using the computer at my own desk. I'm going to have to move it tomorrow- sitting with my back to the door gives me the heebiegeebies.

Pasta sauce is cooking in my kitchen, and I've got most of my clothes squared away. I even figured out how to get more shelves into my closet for crafts stuff. I still have tons of boxes. *sigh*

Oh, and I was so overwhelmed by too many boxes and a scary drive to mention the best part of my visit to Rochester: Seeing people! I got to have dinner with my D&D group before their game ran. Outback has decent food, but what really made the night was the company. [livejournal.com profile] btoblake has longer hair and is still as fun and amusing as ever. [livejournal.com profile] benabik has an iPhone (gadget envy!) and is running a very neat game which had a brief plotline involving a flaming half-orc. [livejournal.com profile] elasmo and Girl-X still tell really neat stories and have good taste in drinks. And [livejournal.com profile] darkvalor showed up late but still managed to eat more food than the rest of us and entertain us while doing so. I also got to spend time at [livejournal.com profile] moriden's place while giving him back his closet.

1. They hired me. Part time, working in their L.L. Home department (where they sell books, videos, furniture, bedding, food items, dishes, and various stuff). This is good, and given that my sifts will be from around 4:00 PM until midnight I get their shift differential bonus. Very nice. Still looking for a full time job in libraries, but this is great while I am looking.

2. They have a free concert series, with GOOD acts. Paula Cole (Where Have all the Cowboys Gone?) has already played. Future acts will include the Portland Symphony Orchestra (free symphony? wow!), Arlo Guthrie ("You can get anything you want..."), Great Big Sea (SQUEEEEEEEE!), the Indigo Girls, Shawn Colvin (Sunny Came Home), and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (wacky neat jazz). Damn, that is some pretty impressive stuff to hear for free.

3. Amazing customer service. They will replace things that break over the course of normal use. I had a large Duffel bag with wheels on it, big enough to take a college student's dirty laundry from Iowa to Maine. One of the wheels broke off after about two to three years of use. I no longer had a receipt. I brought in the bag and the wheel, thinking they would mend it for a fee. They just gave me a new one. Took less than 15 minutes. Fabulous.

I graduate on Friday! If anyone reading this is interested in being at a graduation ceremony at 8:00 AM in Buffalo on Friday, please comment with your email (if I don't have it) and I will give you info on how to get there.

I'm also planning on being in Rochester, at least through the middle of July. I may need to drive up to Maine for interviews near the end of May... but I don't have a job as of yet, and some places I have applied are closer to Rochester. Also, it is easier for me to find temp work in a city the size of Rochester than in the small town in Maine my parents live in. Temp work should give me the flexibility to go interview and such.

However, it has just been mentioned to me that maybe I should try being self-employed for a bit, providing a service to friends and friends of friends.

Need your book or movie collection organized or cataloged?
I've already done this for [livejournal.com profile] benabik and [livejournal.com profile] btoblake. Essentially, I come to your house, take your disorganized book or movie collection, and organize it. Alphabetize by author, or by movie title. You get neat shelves and the ability to actually find your stuff. Read more... )

Do you have a lot of photos that need to be digitized?
Did you buy a scanner, or get one free with your computer, with the intention of scanning all those old photos you have? And then you realized that it is pretty dull, monotonous work? Not to fear, I can scan your photos and organize them in folders for you! Now all those vacation photos will be on your hard drive. If you provide me with CDs, I can burn backup copies for you, and label them with the date and the contents of the CD. Note: I do not own a scanner myself, so I can only provide this service to those who own a scanner or have access to one.

Have sewing machine, will travel
I'm a very crafty person, and am willing to work on all sorts of projects. I have slip-covered a couch with no pattern, fixed fake hair falls, and have been known to mend all sorts of stuff. I have sewn for pets in the past. I can make rat-hmmoks for $3 each if you provide the fabric and $5 if I do. The same prices hold for jeans-leg climbing tunnels for your ratties. I can also make cat toys- balls of felt and assorted fabric toys (which I can stuff with captnip if you've got some).

What about general household chores like dishes, gardening, and painting?
Yes, I will do random household stuff too. Although, if your cleaning situation requires hazard pay due to mold, horrific smells, or other badness, this will be charged separately.

ALL JOBS $10/hour. If interested, please comment on this entry or email me
If enough people are willing to pay me to work for them $30 here and $20 there could add up such that I will not need to visit a temp agency.

Those who live in Buffalo and may want to take advantage of my services, feel free to comment as well. I'll be in Buffalo through the end of May and I can fit in an odd job or two between frantic rounds of packing. I'll also be driving in to Buffalo the second Sunday in June and July, so things could be arranged on those days.

Help a friend and get an organized library in return! Just ask [livejournal.com profile] benabik and [livejournal.com profile] btoblake how nice it is to actually be able to find and use your books!
