Go me.

So tired.

I was supposed to be cat-sitting last night, but it was on my calendar as starting today (not sure it is really today yet). So when M called yesterday evening, we decided that her cats would be OK alone for one night.

The phone wakes me up at 5:40. The top-of-the-line alarm system she has included temperature sensors, and they were going off. It was too cold in the basement. Also, the alarm was making an annoying noise.

Somebody had to rescue the cats. And the pipes. There is no heat and it was either-7 or -3 outside (auto dealership said -7, car thermometer aid -3). I rushed to the rescue.

Furnace guy is on the way. There has been a bagel.

I have accomplished much. And yet so tired.

Note To Self: I must find an occasion to give the local animal shelter money.

Their spot in the paper this week features a cat they describe as "very nice." It seems this cat is so nice and average that she has been passed over in favor of cats with bigger personalities or more stunning coat colors... many times.

Because of this, the cat has the dubious distinction of having been at the shelter longer than any other animal...

for THREE YEARS.

Right then. I've definitely got proof that this is a no-kill shelter. I think I'll stop by their little barn of used stuff this weekend.

I love this icon, and a huge thank you to the lovely person on [livejournal.com profile] ursulav's LJ who said it is OK to use.

Cats have never struk me as dumb.

Discussion of the size of my new bathroom in the previous post has revealed my desire for a cat.

And I can have a cat in the new apartment... with some stipulations:

1) Cat must be indoors only. Check. This was my plan anyway

2) Cat must be spayed or neutered. Check. I am a responsible pet owner

3) Cat must be declawed. Abort, abort...

I am not at all in favor of rule number three. Declawing is an extremely cruel maiming of an animal, and it is illegal in most of Europe as well as Australia.

It also results in health problems (spinal issues due to the cat being forced to walk on its heels as opposed to the toes) and some severe behavioral problems (bting due to the lack of claws to defends itself).

Of most interest to my apartment complex, and how I would hope to convince them to change their policy, is the fact that declawed cats often stop using the litter box. Right after declawing, walking of any kind is extremely painful, and walking of a rough surface is doubly so. Many cats then associate the litterbox with pain, and end up preferring to urinate and deficate in locations that are softer on the feet. Like carpet.

I'm also considering offering more than the $100 deposit they ask for to have a clawed cat. However, between getting supplies for the kitty, having the money for a first vet visit, and paying an adoption fee (one local shelter charges $75 per cat)... well it's going to take a few months to save up money and a larger deposit will extend that wait. If I didn't need to pay off some credt card debt from years ago when I was working temp jobs I could work through money issues much faster.

It is not as though I intend to get a kitten- I'd prefer an adult cay anyway. So this is not a question of me having a vet declaw a cat. And there are cats in shelters and in need of good homes who have been declawed by (badly misinformed) former owners.

So I while I want to take a stand on an ethical issue, I could just comply with the complex's rules and take the easy route. I'll have plenty of tiem to decide.

Oh, and the wait for a cat gets longer, because I love cat trees!

This is going to be a very long post, I think. Enough cool stuff happened over the weekend to make it so. For those not interested, feel free to skip. A lot of what I write here is for me, so that I remember. For everyone else:

I will be gone, gone, gone after 4 today. I'll be visiting my lovely sister in a tiny little town. I will not be checking email, AIM, LiveJournals, etc. I will go straight from my mini-vacation to the Sabbat game with only a quick stop to pick up a shirt. Should things like Ren Faire plans actually get made, tell me at Sabbat or leave a message on my answering machine- I'll see that.

I anticipate a wonderful visit filled with good food, plants, a very handsome cat, and fun. Yay! I so need this.
