Safely back from Canada, where I was visiting my sister, her partner, and my niece. There was, as always an amazing meal of locally grown food, work on the farm, crafts, and music.

That is what we are at, up here in Maine. Single digits, your eyes ache after a while. It was -6 yesterday.

On the plus side, that means that the amazing Gelato Fiasco was selling gelato for 38% off (1% per degree below freezing, with a caveat that if it is -68 degrees why will not pay us to eat gelato). We are thinking of going there today.

Gelato Fiasco

I have been super busy with holidays, snow, and birthdays.

We got a foot or so of snow the week before Christmas. It melted a bit. The weekend before Christmas was a 2 day ice storm, Sunday-Monday. The weekend after Christmas we got about 6 inches of new snow (it was about 8-10 where I work, and the drive home December 30th, Sunday night at 9:30 was not fun).

More snow yesterday into today. It is incredibly light and drifts everywhere, because when it snows at -6 there is nearly no moisture in the snow.

There has been much shoveling, and biodegradable kitty litter on the ice. More shoveling today, in half-hour increments, as it is still extremely cold.

I got, among other things, a zany fascinator for my hair, a lovely hand-made mug, and a book on the history of the Lego mini-figure for Christmas. My display of Holiday Lego sets won the cube-decorating contest at work and I got a $100 Wal-Mart gift card. I bought all the cleaning supplies that we use (ALL of them) and a new magnetic whiteboard/cork-board for a message center.

I crocheted 2 small Totoros, 2 tiny Totoros, a chibi Cuthulu, a chibi ninja, and I am at work on a Psyduck pokemon. I also made my niece a sweater and hat, and a hat and scarf for her Raggety Ann doll.

Visiting my sister, her awesome partner, and my niece at Thanksgiving was a truly wonderful vacation. My niece is the most cheerful, happy, and non-fussy baby I have ever met. She is also very friendly, gave me a head-but kiss as soon as she saw me.

Life is cold but good, and busy.

So, time has just flown by. I got sick in late September, and then again two weeks later on Columbus Day. Having the death plague twice in a one-month timeframe really throws everything out of whack. I had to scramble at work, and while I was doing a lot of lying down trying to get well, I was not online.

November had two vacations - I was out of town for most of one weekend to go to a Goo Goo Dolls concert in New Hampshire. That was my birthday present (the show got moved to a month after my birthday) and it was awesome. Then I spend Thanksgiving in Nova Scotia, Canada with my family, the rest of whom were buying land.

This month has been busy with holiday shopping and taking care of Angel, who has been having terrible headaches for the past few days.

This has all added up to me barely being online or on LJ. I am once again far, far behind on my friends list, but I hope to rectify that soon.

I hope you are all doing well, and that your lives have been less crazy than mine!

Well, more at my parents' house from ReaderCon, but that parses oddly.

Yes, it is indeed 12:48 AM.

But since I will be a bit busy tomorrow unpacking and finishing work on a spiffy elven vest, I am posting now, so everyone knows I made the drive safely.

I hope I'll be seeing a bunch of very cool and interesting people wandering through my journal, and I'll be looking in on their journals.

*waves* Welcome!

Life has been busy lately! I drove down to Rochester to see two of my friends get married. It was a lovely wedding, and I got to see many of my friends, which was truly wonderful.

While the weather was totally uncooperative for walking, I was able to get a bunch of reading done!

Book reviews and walking totals )

The plan for the next couple of weeks:
Find the rulebook for the game I'll be playing the weekend of June 11.
Figure out costuming for the game in June, and sew what I need to.
Sew stuff for my Galactic Police Officer costume for PortCon
Do yet more dishes.
Do laundry.
Clean more of my apartment.
Go to the prop-making session for the playtest game I will be playing in August.
Go to what may be the last bean supper of the season in my hometown.

So, after wandering the beach, I headed back to my hotel.

The party itself, plus a Halloween costume! )

I have been working on a post about this trip for a while. And then it turned out to be HUGE! So I am breaking it up, but even the chunks are long. But it was a fun trip, and I hope a fun read. With photos.

More in a couple of days!

The directions to a holiday party I am going to include an intersection with a local store.

Hussey's General Store : Shot Guns, Wedding Gowns, Cold Beer

Indeed, they do appear to exist : http://www.husseysgeneralstore.com/

Perhaps I should leave early to experience the wonders?

The book launch party for Carousel Tides was a lot of fun, with some great conversation and lovely art. Sharon Lee throws a good party.

I've never been to OOB before, and had a lovely time. Most of the town was shuttered, but the few stores that were open had the nicest stuff, like Board Silly and the candy factory.

That was my birthday mini-vacation. And it was good weekend in a lovely place, with books and book-people.

Edits - the link for Board Silly now actually works!

Well, I must have done well. I managed to loose weight while on vacation.

Also, there is a country song for everything. And they get stuck in your head...

I made it back to Maine. I hurt everywhere.

Traffic in Massachusetts got better as it got later in the day.

Blargh.

So, I don't always hit LJ every day.

Friday, I was thankful for my local bookstore, and the fact that they will order in anything I need, and are locally owned and operated. Yes, it is handy to wander into a giant chain store and find just what you want on the shelf, but I like local businesses more.

Saturday, I was extremely thankful for Skype. Skype lets me call my Panther over the internet, and talk with him for six hours. And once he gets a web-cam, I will be able to see him. Playing D&D and just chatting is just wonderful.

Today is not over yet, but I think I shall be thankful for back roads. I'll be driving to another town for a con meeting, and taking the back roads the whole way. There is something every nice about driving along the back roads for an hour, past lakes and hills and little towns.

Hi.

So, I do exist. Unpacking, work (great new job, lots of work to do), and the new Pathfinder Role Playing Game has really sucked up a lot of my time. Oh, and I also found a local D&D game at the local store.

I'll put up a real post at some point, possibly after I get back from vacation. Said vacation will be taking me to Rochester for part of Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (the 5th-7th). If you would like me to crash your Labor Day weekend, do speak up.

This caught my attention today. I know I've got a number of comic-reading friends, so I must ask: do you think this is a good or bad thing? I'm not thrilled, but maybe a comics geek has a better perspective on this one. Cory? Netbard? Anyone?

So, I need to write in this thing more.

Let's see, the holidays happened, and there was lots of driving around, and then seeing my sister after the holidays while she was moving. And I need to get my passport renewed, shince she will be living in Canada for a while and I'd like to visit.

I've found a local gaming group, which is cool. They play war games and board games, and eventually invited me to a D&D game. This is great, I've really missed D&D. We only play twice a month, or one a month if people's schedules are zany, but it's great fun. And I've kind of gotten back into painting miniatures, which I enjoy.

There may be another D&D group eventually. I finally met the doctor around here who plays D&D, and may end up playing in his Pathfinder campaign. Which would be cool, as playing 3.5 again means that the skills would no longer be nerfed.

And I will be near Rochester this weekend. But, not really in Rochester. I'll be at Running Gagg, spending a romantic weekend at a gaming convention. Well, I think it's romantic, but I'm a geek. Anyone else going?

Back from vacation.

Back in the same state as Vinny (see icon).

Both a visit to a friend and work have confirmed that the WiiFit is the coolest thing ever. Sadly, no money for a new gizmo and a bigger TV.

Once again, I am in Maine.

Arrived Friday evening. I'll be leaving Tuesday night, and staying with a friend on the way back to New York.

Vacation is good. I've already read one book. For reference, I have not had the opportunity to read a single novel since getting my new job and moving. I've been that busy.

Small Favor is a great novel, very well written. Then ending is a real downer- I can see that Jim is setting up for the more depressing middle bits of the long war.

I have another two books with me, as well as a crochet and a knitting project. Life is good.

The beach at Fort Popham is still lovely, and Spinny's still makes great onion rings and amazing blueberry shortcake. Got in to L.L. Bean today, and we had dinner at the Mediterranean Grill (Pastito! Red Lentil Soup! Turkish Tea! Baklava!)

Life is good indeed. Tomorrow, random adventures with M. We never know where we'll end up.

I'll be back home with regular internet access on Wednesday.

Whee, con

Home again, home again, jiggety jig.

Very tired from the drive, but home. The con was very fun. There will be a con report of some kind when I am awake.
eseme: (seeming)
So Simcon was fun, and I think I'll do a con report after I get back from my second gaming con of the season, UBCon. See http://www.ubsarpa.com for details.

And one of the guests is Jess Hartley again! She'll read from the new Hunter, which is pretty neat: http://jesshartley.livejournal.com/348673.html

Yay!
