Harry potter again
Jun. 21st, 2003 03:58 pmGot up, had breakfast, was reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix again at noon. Am now on 502 out of 870 pages.
I like a world where people sing "God Rest You, Merrye Hippogriffs" at Christmas. I bet they even sing the real words to "Greensleves".
Must get ready for game while I am still capable of stopping. I am bringing the book to game though, Lilly is 18 and she woud certainly be reading the latest Harry Potter book. She's even dressing for the occasion- something suitably witchy of course. Now as for jewlery... Hmmm, there are the blue glass spiral earrings and matching necklace of course, but the green glass frog earrings are more fun, and I could even dig out my elf necklace to go with them, I haven't worn that one in ages...
Decisions, decisions.

Wise Words
Jun. 20th, 2003 05:12 pmI get some of the best quotes just doing academic research, or schoolwork.
No, really!! Don't all leave now, hear me out.
"Knowledge is commonly socially constructed, through collaborative efforts toward shared objectives or by dialogues and challenges brought about by differences in persons' perspectives." [1]
Differences in perspectives... isn't that what life is all about, when you get right down to it? That's the joy of meeting new people- finding out how their perspectives differ from yours and how they are the same. It's what makes conversations work and be interesting. And according to that author of the above statement, it's called learning. Meeting new people is learning, conversing is learning, life is learning. I like that.
And here's one I found in Winter Quarter, while I was reading through my graphics textbook, trying to get my Ray Tracing assignment to work properly. And why was this lovely piece of poetry in as unlikely a place as a graphics textbook? Because it has the word "ray" in it and the author was trying to be cute. Computer science textbooks do that all too often, and generally fail miserably. Still, this is wonderful poetry, regardless of how I stumbled upon it:
In full-orbed glory, yonder moon divine
Rolls through the dark blue depths;
Beneath her steady ray
The desert circle spreads
Like the round ocean, girdled with the sky.
How beautiful is the night!
Robert Southey
There you go, my thoughts of the moment. Off to try and finish this proposal. *sigh* I may not be done by 6, darn it.

Money Woes
Jun. 19th, 2003 06:47 pm*Sigh* Yesterday I thought I might be able to go to SIGGRAPH, a big graphics conference. It's in San Diego this year. But I did some quick calculations today, and came to the conclusion that it simply isn't affordable for me, which stinks. Then I found out they wanted students to be there Tuesday-Thursday, and I just can't miss that much class. So the whole issue of money is a moot point for that trip.
However, I really want to go to Florida this fall, for a super-cool get-together with a bunch of friends. It's a yearly thing that we call the Howl, and it's a blast. I had so much fun last year, it's well worth the money to get there. But I'm not sure I'll have the money, and I probably won't know til August. Which stinks, because I could probably get better airfare deals if I started looking around now. And even if I can fly down there, I'll basically be able to pay for food, and that's it. Everyone else seems to want to go to a bunch of theme parks like Magic Kingdom, and I just won't be able to do that. Still, we had tons of fun last year in Maine, no theme parks needed.
I just hope everything works out. I'll figure something out, because I really don't want to miss the Howl.
I'm still not feeling all that great, and I really hope I'm not on my way to getting sick. I didn't get any work done today, between a freezing cold office, paying my rent, and finding out that my paycheck (the first one this quarter) somehow got misplaced. So I have a lot to do tomorrow, since I need to have my proposal handed in to my advisor by 6.
After that I can spend most of the weekend in bed, reading the new Harry Potter book. Yay for good books!

World Tree and brownie experiments
Jun. 19th, 2003 12:04 amSo I found this cool brownie mix while shopping on Sunday. Basically, you just add yogurt to the dry mix- I know it sounds odd, but I thought I would try it.
So World Tree tonight was made up of my unwilling test subjects... Mwahaha!
Aside from the "It's not horrible" comment, the reaction was good. Success. They have a number of flavors of this mix. And while raspberry brownies do not at all appeal to me, mocha or mint might be acceptable.
Hmmm, there is always D&D next week.
Becky owns cool clothes- this wonderful blue velvet-like shirt with sparkly buttons. Very petable. Cuddling with Becky on a couch is good.

Still trying to get this right...
Jun. 15th, 2003 05:45 pmColors are finally OK. Yay! Discovered a handy tool that will give me the hex codes of any pixel I move my mouse over on the screen. This is good.
Still no pictures- silly LiveJournal will not believe that my files are gifs or jpgs. Not sure if it is because the extensions are lowercase, or because my friend really did send me bmp files disguised as jpgs.
benabik, please email or respond with your recommended free image editing tools for OSX. But not that crazy one that involves messing with UNIX libraries, please. Darn GraphicConverter for not being at all free, not even for 15 uses!
Hmmm, must remember to email Natasha and ask if it is OK to part of one of her beautiful paintings on this site.
Having songs stuck in your head when you aren't sure of the title or when in an artist's career they were recorded is annoying. See music.
New growth on fir trees is wonderful- neon green that just screams "I'm alive!" to the entire world.
