And we pull out the Firefly icon because the worst thing about this show is that it apparently got the character of Wash killed.

Otherwise, it's brilliant. If you get the chance to go, do it!

M bought tickets as a birthday present (my birthday is not til much later, but the show is now) and then nearly forgot to check the date until this morning.

I got to debut a fabulous new dress and have dinner at Richard's (really excellent German food). Maine State Music Theatre puts on a great show, and this was no exception. The sets and costumes were particularly good - this is a show with constantly changing sets and more costume switches than you can shake a stick at. The show is hilarious - all the best bits from the movie and many other Monty Python references thrown in as one liners. The page has a YouTube video of one of the performances.

Cause I made out like one.

Mom sent a very cool new blue tye-dye crinkle skirt, and a dress in my favorite batik pattern - purple with turquoise stars and moons. She also hid a little something in the card.

[livejournal.com profile] benabik and [livejournal.com profile] btoblake have a box of pre-bought stuff which would make good gifts for various friends. Thus I got a sculpture of a red dragon hatching.

I was able to get that gift due to deciding at the last minute to drive up to Rochester this weekend. The inspiration for this was Colleen, who was very fortuitously in the area. Visiting a friend just in time for my birthday was great.

I also got LARP for my birthday. I don't really get to game much anymore, so this was exceedingly cool. Even better was being handed an NPC character sheet with elder Protean, and Potence, and Fortitude, and Celerity, and Valeran. Sadly, the character didn't get to kill anything, but not for lack of trying. It was very vulnerable to Dread Gaze, and spent a bunch of time up a tree in Mist Form, hiding.

I then arrived back home in time for a party at work today - the annual staff reception. So I got cake, and there was a harpist.

And getting to my apartment after the party, I checked my mail. It's here! [livejournal.com profile] pelelandra sent me a copy of Terry Pratchett's new book "Nation" from England. And it arrived just in time. The British Edition not only has a better cover, but this one is signed: "To Robin, Happy Birthday!"

So the big blackout did very little other than make me throw a few things out of my fridge. It was mostly a wonderful opportunity to play games by candlelight. Which is great fun. I love candlelight.

The drive back from Chris's place was kind of scary though. Power was back in some places and not others, and I only saw one other driver actually stop at a blacked-out light. Just one on the whole drive back. It was scary, as I had to make turns at some of those lights, and seeing people not slow down at all was worrying. Thankfully I turned at intersections empty of cars but me.

Work today was interesting. It was my last day, and I met with my replacement. I'd planned on actually showing him the systems I work with and the way files need to be transfered and stuff. But the entire CS department network was down. So I couldn't do a thing. The entire university was closed due to power shortages, and that meant they did not turn on the AC in our building. And since the people who designed our new building did not listen to the sys admins and give the machine room its own AC unit, we could not turn any machines on. The machine room was 80 degrees (in the Danger! Warning!) zone, and that was with all the machines turned off. So I just typed up all I could think of that he needed to know, and packed up my office- all the Legos and the Nerf guns. The rats were back for another visit- Sam's house had no AC and was hotter than our office. The girls are lovely, as always.

After work I got to hang out with Eugene. Which is damn fun. We walked around in a huge cemetery, talking for a over an hour. Very fun, though we both forgot to bring water. Then back to his place where I successfully chased down and ice cream truck and we played video games. I can play fighting games! My total lack of skill with a controller is much less of an impediment, you just hit buttons really fast, and laugh when your character does bizarre stuff. Lots of fun and a bit of silliness. I needed that. Thanks Eugene!

Visit my sister tomorrow, and get to have the first pick of any clothes she is getting rid of. She's decided she needs less stuff. Me, I've decided that more clothes is not a bad thing.

This is going to be a very long post, I think. Enough cool stuff happened over the weekend to make it so. For those not interested, feel free to skip. A lot of what I write here is for me, so that I remember. For everyone else:

Got up, had breakfast, was reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix again at noon. Am now on 502 out of 870 pages.

I like a world where people sing "God Rest You, Merrye Hippogriffs" at Christmas. I bet they even sing the real words to "Greensleves".

Must get ready for game while I am still capable of stopping. I am bringing the book to game though, Lilly is 18 and she woud certainly be reading the latest Harry Potter book. She's even dressing for the occasion- something suitably witchy of course. Now as for jewlery... Hmmm, there are the blue glass spiral earrings and matching necklace of course, but the green glass frog earrings are more fun, and I could even dig out my elf necklace to go with them, I haven't worn that one in ages...

Decisions, decisions.
